Portsmouth Guildhall is a neo-classical building which was completed in 1890. The venue was renamed in 1926 from the City Hall to the Guildhall when Portsmouth received 'city' status.
The Guildhall was devastated by incendiary bombs during a raid in 1941 and only the outer walls remained, albeit in a fire-damaged state. War compensation funding was used to rebuild the Guildhall which cost £1.5 million. It was officially reopened by The Queen in 1959.
